  Manning Whitby of Toronto received one of eight EIROforum Special Awards during this morning’s awards ceremony at EUCYS 2019 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The award, from EUROfusion, a consortium of national fusion research institutes, includes a one-week trip to the agency’s facility in Culham, UK. Whitby, together with Bhavya Mohan of Ottawa, represented Canada at the international competition, which rewards and celebrates promising young scientists from Europe and beyond, who present their projects to a panel of international judges.   Canada's first participation in the China Adolescents Science and Technology Innovation Contest (CASTIC) delivers two gold medals and two special awards in Macau.   Du 12 au 18 mai, Phoenix a été l’hôte de l’édition 2019 de l’Intel ISEF, ce championnat mondial des expo-sciences auquel huit élèves canadiens ont pris part. Pendant six jours, les quelque 1 800 élèves originaires de plus de 80 pays ont donné le meilleur d’eux-mêmes lors de cette compétition. Les élèves peuvent gagner des prix et des bourses d’études totalisant 5 millions de dollars lors de cet événement extraordinaire.   Phoenix, Arizona hosted the 2019 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) May 12-18, where eight Canadian students competed for top prizes. The rigorous six day competition brought out the best in the approximate 1,800 students who participate every year from more than 80 countries. This amazing experience allows students to win prizes and scholarships which total an astonishing 5 million dollars.   Eight of Canada’s top high school scientists have been selected by Youth Science Canada to represent the country at the 2019 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) from May 12-18 in Phoenix, Arizona. Intel ISEF is the world championships of science fairs. Team Canada-ISEF 2019 was selected by a distinguished panel of 19 university faculty, researchers, educators and Team Canada-ISEF alumni through a competitive national selection process that began in October and concluded today.   It came down to the final two award presentations, but young Canadians won two of the three First Place Awards at this year's European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) in Dublin, Ireland. Brendon Matusch (15) of Sudbury, Ontario (left in photo) and Nicolas Fedrigo (17) of Victoria, British Columbia (right in photo) made EUCYS history in that moment as Canada became the first non-EU country to win two of the three First Place Awards. ISEF is the world's largest pre-college celebration of science that brings together over 1,800 students from more than 80 nations to compete for over $4 million in awards, scholarships, tuition grants, internships, scientific field trips and 3 grand prizes, including a $75,000 university scholarship. Team Canada received top honours at the 2017 European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) in Tallinn, Estonia. Danish Mahmood (right, in photo), a grade 9 student from London, Ontario, won one of the 7,000 Euro First Prize Awards awarded to the top three projects.   Nicole Schmidt from Sir Winston Churchill High School in Calgary, Alberta has been selected as winner of the Canadian Stockholm Junior Water Prize. She will represent Canada in the 2017 Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition during World Water Week from August 27 to September 1 in Stockholm, Sweden. In her project, Optimizing Fluid Flow Systems, Schmidt developed a method to create and stabilize bulk bubble foam, which was used to successfully separate ultrafine heavy metal particles dispersed in industrial processing water and groundwater.
